Welcome to Sustainable
Geotransportation/Geoenvironmental Infrastructure (SGI)
Research Group
SGI research group focuses on sustainability and resilience, as well as efficiency, of geo infrastructures that are affiliated with environmental and transportation fields.
Resilience refers to the ability of a system to withstand and recover from disruptions or stresses, such as natural disasters or climate change. Sustainability refers to the ability of a system to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, while also minimizing its impact on the environment. Efficiency refers to the ability of a system to perform its functions with minimum waste of resources, time, or effort.
Environmental infrastructures that we focus on include wide range of systems such as municipal, hazardous, and residual waste management facilities, air pollution monitoring systems, energy generating facilities, and natural resource management systems. Transportation infrastructures that we focus on include roadways, abutments, earth retaining structures, ground interactions with bridge systems, and impoundments. Additionally, we focus on evaluating and developing solutions for impacts from slope instabilities, land subsidence, coastal and urban flooding, and hurricanes on environmental and transportation infrastructures.
The group's research includes the geo fields of geotransportation, geoenvironmental, geological, geomechanics, geotechnical, geochemistry, and geohazards. The group conducts research on innovative and recycled materials, geosynthetics, technologies, and construction techniques that can reduce the environmental footprint of infrastructure projects and promote resiliency.
SGI research group focuses on predominantly experimental based, applied research. The research group has strong engagement with government and industry and our research outcomes rapidly find their way into practice in disciplines related to geo-engineering.
Nearly all our research activities include both undergraduate and graduate students and we strongly support diversity among our team members who come from different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.
